Volusia County deputies search for missing 79-year-old woman

Rose Bruce last seen at Ormond Beach Walmart

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – Deputies continue to search for a missing 79-year-old woman in Volusia County, and sheriff's officials say, she may be lost in her car.

Rose Bruce was reported missing around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday by her daughter-in-law, according to deputies.

Both women work at the Ormond Beach Walmart. Bruce's shift ended at 10 p.m. Monday. She was expected to return to the store an hour later to pick up her daughter-in-law, but deputies say she never showed up.

According to the daughter-in-law, who lives with Bruce on San Marco Drive, the fire alarm was going off when she got home and smoke was coming from the oven. Both Bruce's purse and groceries were in the apartment.

Deputies say Bruce has never been reported missing before and has not been diagnosed with any type of cognitive impairment.

"It's just not like her. I don't know. I don't have a good feeling," Cathy Ryan told dispatchers in the 911 call.

Deputies said they have since learned that Bruce has shown recent signs of forgetfulness, leading them to believe she is lost in her car. The investigation hasn't turned up any signs of foul play, according deputies.

Bruce was described as a white woman, about 5 feet 1 inch tall and 110 pounds. She has blue eyes and gray hair. Her car is a blue 1997 Honda Accord with the Florida tag K383JA.

Anyone with information about her whereabouts is asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 386-736-5999.
