Volusia County school janitor arrested for sexual battery of a child

George Cortes, 76, faces multiple charges

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A Volusia County school janitor is now behind bars after being arrested on Friday on charges related to the sexual battery of two female victims.

The janitor George Cortes, 76, who worked for Timbercrest Elementary School  was arrested on accusations that he sexually battered two victims, one who was 15 to 16 years old and the other who was 18 to 19 years old, sometime between 2014 to 2015.

Deputies said the 18 to 19 year old was sexually battered twice after Cortes came into her bedroom while she was sleeping and fondled her in her bed. The investigation revealed that Cortes sexually battered the young victim twice by coming into her room and taking her into his bedroom to batter her, deputies said.

The investigation revealed that none of the allegations happened on school campus or involved students, according to deputies. However, Volusia County sheriff's detectives are asking parents to talk with their children if they knew Cortes and to contact the Sheriff’s Office Child Exploitation Unit at 386-323-3574.

Cortes has been charged with three counts of sexual battery on a victim under the age of 18 and one count of sexual battery.

Cortes worked at Timbercrest Elementary School since February 2017, and since his arrest, he is no longer allowed to work on any Volusia County School campus, officials said.
