FPL warns customers of bill payment scam

Scam similar to nationwide bill payment scam

Florida Power & Light officials are warning their customers of a bill payment scam similar to one that has been plaguing the nation.

FPL officials say the scammers are contacting customers by phone, text message, email or social media and customers are being told the federal government will pay their bill in exchange for their personal information.

The scammers then provide customers with false bank information to pay their utility bill.

Impacted FPL customers will receive letters stating their payment was invalid and will still need to pay their bill.

FPL officials say nearly 5,000 customers have been affected throughout Florida and they suspect other power companies are being targeted as well.

FPL issued a statement on their website, saying "We urge customers to ignore any suspicious claims to provide personal information such as bank account numbers, user names and passwords, credit card numbers, or their Social Security number."
