Fundraiser held for family of girl who killed herself

Yard sale to help raise money, awareness about effects of bullying

LAKELAND, Fla. - A fundraiser has been organized for the family of a 12-year-old girl who committed suicide after relentless bullying.

The Ledger reports Peyton Carter held a yard sale Saturday to raise money for Rebecca Sedwick's family and raise awareness about the effects of bullying.

Carter attends Crystal Lake Middle School, where deputies say the bullying against Sedwick began. She didn't know Sedwick very well, but worries for her family.

Carter and her family sold everything from clothes to lawn equipment. In total they raised $600, all of which will go to Sedwick's family.

Detectives say Sedwick was "terrorized" by as many as 15 girls who bullied her through online message boards and texts. Authorities say Sedwick climbed a tower at an abandoned concrete plant and hurled herself to her death.
