1 person injured in Brevard County house fire

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – A Viera home was destroyed by a fire Tuesday evening, leaving two people and two dogs displaced.

News 6 partner Florida Today reports that Martha Roberts was putting up her Christmas tree at the home on Laramie Circle when the fire began. Her husband rushed in from the garage and said, “We’ve got a fire.”

Sure enough, Roberts said, there were flames climbing up the wall of the garage. Her husband began filling buckets of water in the kitchen sink while she dialed 911.

Firefighters responded and had the blaze contained within about 15 minutes, according to District Chief Tom Neidert with Brevard County Fire Rescue. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Neidert said.

“The flames kept getting bigger and bigger,” Roberts said. “I can’t believe, it’s a conflagration. The place goes right up.”

At the height of the fire, Neidert said the roof was fully enveloped in flames.

Roberts, who has lived in the home for nearly seven years, corralled her dogs and got them out of the house as she heard successive explosions and the fire grew.

Roberts said her husband, Rick Norton, suffered minor burns and some smoke inhalation and was taken to the hospital.

Firefighters were still working the scene at 5 p.m.
