How to stay safe in parking lot

Tips include parking in well-lit area, limiting distractions

If you are in a parking lot anywhere, remaining safe is key. Tuesday evening a woman was kidnapped in a Target parking lot. The Osceola County Sheriff's Office is looking for the man who did it.

Experts say it is vitally important for anyone walking in a parking lot at night to do the following:

1. Park in a well-lit area. If your car is parked and the area is not well-lit, you may be unable to see someone who is potentially crouching behind a car.

2. Carry keys or pepper spray. If you need to defend yourself, having a set of keys or pepper spray can be used to fend off an attacker.

3. Limit distractions. It is easy to want to continue a phone call or place earbuds in your ear to finish a song on the way to your car. Do not do that, experts said. You want to be fully aware of your surroundings and the surroundings of others.

4. Park closer to the entrance of the store or around other cars. If something was to occur, you would be closer to others and not isolated by being in the back of the parking lot.
