273 drivers caught speeding in Volusia County school zones, officials say

'Oh Crap!' school zone speeder gets $600 fine

DeLAND,Fla. - Eight Members of the Volusia County motor team issued citations to 33 drivers, including a local man clocked at 59 mph in the 25 mph, during a school zone speed check point on 15-A and New Hampshire Avenue in DeLand.

The driver, who asked not to be identified said he looked up, saw the blinking light, and exclaimed, "Oh crap, the zone!"

He was slapped with a $606 dollar fine and a mandatory court appearance.

Deputy Christopher Higgins says drivers are not paying attention.

"Everybody is in a hurry," Higgins said. "Everybody's running and running and running and this is twice a day, five days a week no matter now often we are out here."

Deputies set up the radar check point for both arrival and afternoon dismissal at Southwestern Middle School located at 605 New Hampshire Avenue in DeLand.

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office is the fourth agency to allow WKMG Local 6 reporter Mike Holfeld and photographer Greg Wilson to join motor units on speed check points.

Since the start of the 2012-2013 school year, the Volusia County Clerk of the Court has documented 273 school zone speeding violations.

One of the fastest to date was in Oak Hill where a driver was clocked going 60 mph in a 25 mph school zone.

Volusia County records show a total of 16 students have been hit by drivers as they walked or rode their bikes to and from county schools.

All 16 injuries were minor and only three took place in the Volusia County sheriff's jurisdiction.  That's down dramatically from the 27 students injured in or near school zones last year.

Police motor units in Orlando, Orange County, Seminole County and Volusia counties have allowed Local 6 to document school speed zone check points.
