Calls, emails ask for personal information

Viewers have called and emailed News 6 about schemes and scams that they have received asking them to pay their debt or asking about more personal information. News 6 helped them get results and keep you informed about possible scams that are going on.

Scam 1:  You owe back taxes, IRS phone scam says

Connie Bolen received calls from an IRS impostor claiming an audit showed she owed back taxes and would face legal action if she didn’t take care of the issue right away. When her brother called the phone number back the man on the end of the line hung up.


If you receive a call from the IRS saying that you might owe federal taxes call 800-829-1040,  fill out the “IRS Impersonation scam” form on TIGTA’s website, www.tigta.gov, or call TIGTA at 800-366-4484.

Scam 2:  Phone scam impersonates city utilities call 
An authentic City of Ocala utility recording is tracked to South America, where impostors ask for you personal information about your utility bill.

Scam 3: Negative information added to your public record   
Former federal agent Robert McClintock, a former internet investigator, received an email saying negative information had been added to his public records. The email wanted you to click a link and use a personal search site that you would have to pay for. McClintock said this is what the email will be titled: ATTN: Visit here to review your updated personal records.
