Lake County couple punches student in face at bus stop, police say

Parents say student made inappropriate comments to their child, according to police

CLERMONT, Fla. - A Lake County couple has been arrested after authorities say they punched a student at a bus stop after the student made inappropriate comments to their 17-year-old daughter.

The girl was walking to her bus stop on East Grand Highway and North Disston Avenue Wednesday morning just before 7 a.m. when her mother, Esandra Macedo, heard her daughter start to scream.

The girl told authorities the 17-year-old male student started trying to fight other kids at the bus stop when he turned his attention to her, threatening to sexually assault her.

"She said 'don't talk to my daughter like that' and so what he did he pushed her and started pushing her by the road and my mom go ahead and slapped him in the face," the girl, who didn't want to be identified, told Local 6.

Macedo said she began hitting and punching the teen to get him off of her daughter. She then called her husband for help, who was later arrested after he hit the teenager.

Authorities said the couple said they hit the victim, but that the victim was first aggressive toward them.

The bus driver told authorities it was the parents who were the aggressors. Both Smith and Macedo are being charged with assault and battery. The victim was treated for a bloody nose.

Initial conflicting reports said the incident occurred on the bus. It's not clear if the parents boarded the bus or not.
