Leesburg police search for hit-and-run driver

Pedestrian hit, critically injured at 441 and Mills Street

LEESBURG, Fla. – Police are searching for a driver who they said hit a 19-year-old pedestrian Wednesday night in Leesburg and left the scene of the crash.

The crash was reported at 8:36 p.m. at the intersection of US Highway 441 and Mills Street.

The victim, Nidgel Fernandez, was taken to Leesburg Regional Medical Center and later flown to Orlando Regional Medical Center. Medical staff said he was in critical condition when he arrived at ORMC.

The vehicle involved in the crash is described as a white SUV, possibly a GM model like a Tahoe or a Suburban.

Police said the vehicle will likely have damage to the front end and a missing headlight.

Traffic was diverted around the scene for 3 hours after the crash, police said.
