Local groups head to Texas to assist with relief efforts

Orlando Fire Department, Orlando's Salvation Army sending crews

ORLANDO, Fla.
Help from all across the country, including right here in Central Florida, is now headed to Texas to assist with Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.

Orlando's Salvation Army spent Monday morning packing their canteen trucks full of food that can be cooked on the spot, water and other items for those displaced by Hurricane Harvey. The self-sustaining trucks can feed up to 1,500 people a day, and have grills and refrigerators on board.

"We've got two very large cookers here where we can grill, basically flat grill burgers, hot dogs, or steam-cook large volumes of, like, chili, spaghetti," volunteer Steve Rocca said.

Rocca, along with two other Orlando volunteers, will stay at least two weeks in Texas before another crew is sent for relief. Crews expect to spend months in Texas on rotation.

Texas leaders have called for assistance from all types of organizations following extreme flooding, including aid for ongoing rescue and recovery efforts. The Orlando Fire Department sent a boat, other rescue tools and trucks.

Orange County Fire also sent teams. The local Red Cross is also mobilized in the area and called for crews across the country. A dozen volunteers will bring several emergency response vehicles.

Help is also needed from regular citizens, but both the Salvation Army and The Red Cross says they are not accepting clothing or food donations. They ask that monetary donations be given instead.
