Earlier in the day, investigators say James was arguing with the victim in the parking lot of the victim’s apartment complex. According to police, during the fight, James pulled a gun out of his car. The victim told officers, James shouted something to the effect of, “I’m going to (expletive) kill you,” before firing at him twice.

The man then ran toward his home to get his own gun, according to the report, which added that James then hit the victim in the back of the head with his gun, then took off.

After police arrested James, he claimed the attack was self-defense, saying that the victim lunged at him and that he only fired into the air. Police say James also admitted to hitting the victim, but again said he feared the man was going to get a weapon and harm him.

James now faces charges of attempted murder and aggravated battery with a firearm.
