Disney’s PeopleMover to reopen this weekend following monthslong closure

The "Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover" at the Magic Kingdom is an elevated ride into the world of tomorrow. Spend a few minutes off your feet and enjoy the scenery.

ORLANDO, Fla. – After months of closure, the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover will be back on the move this weekend, according to Walt Disney World’s president.

Jeff Vahle, Walt Disney World Resort’s president, shared on his Instagram Friday that the ride will reopen “later this weekend.”

The website for Walt Disney World says the PeopleMover has been closed for refurbishment, though it was a revolutionary attraction when it opened in 1975. The 10-minute ride is known to visit behind-the-scenes of other rides, such as Space Mountain and Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin.

“Always ahead of its time, the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover accelerates magnetically using linear induction motors,” the website says.

Disney announced the PeopleMover’s closure before the pandemic, and it was one of the rides that did not reopen with the parks in July 2020. Vahle also shared recently that “A Celebration of Festival of the Lion King” will return to Animal Kingdom in mid-May.

The news of the PeopleMover reopening comes one day after a collision between cabins of the Skyliner at Disney World, leaving guests stranded for hours.
