ORLANDO, Fla. – The Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX) held a meeting on Monday evening to provide updates on a project intended to reduce traffic congestion along State Road 408 in Orlando.

According to CFX, the project is aimed at improving the flow of traffic by widening the roadway, thereby increasing the number of vehicles that can access it at any given time.

“More than 1640,000 vehicles per day travel on SR-408, with a significant portion traveling westbound in the morning from east Orlando to reach downtown and I-4,” a release from CFX says. “This study has evaluated alternatives for improving traffic flow by providing a continuous five-lane section in the westbound direction within the project limits.”

CFX leaders said they want to ease traffic by adding an additional westbound lane between I-4 and Bumby Avenue, and between SR-436 and Goldenrod Road. (Central Florida Expressway Authority)

CFX said that it is evaluating the impacts on adding a westbound lane from Interstate 4 to Bumby Avenue, and another from SR-436 to Goldenrod Road, which would match previous improvements between Bumby Avenue and SR-436.

While the project is still in the study phase, that phase is expected to be finished by the end of April, CFX announced.

CFX officials added that construction on the improvements is expected to start in 2025, and it is set to be completed by 2027.

Property owners impacted by the expansion will also be notified, according to CFX.
