Carjacking ends in I-4 chase, crash

Chase reaches speeds up to 80 mph, deputies say

SANFORD, Fla. – A carjacking victim is recovering from his injuries after deputies say his attacker led them on a two-county chase.

The carjacking happened early Wednesday at the Sanford Auto Dealers Exchange, which is at 2851 St. Johns Parkway.

According to police, the victim told officers he was in a parking lot when a man tackled him and stole a vehicle.

Deputies say the vehicle was spotted on Interstate 4 a short time later, but the driver sped away into Volusia County when an officer tried to make a traffic stop.

Sanford police and Volusia County deputies followed the car for nearly 20 miles as the driver reached speeds up to 80 mph, deputies said.

After exiting at State Road 44, the driver crashed into a wooded area and was placed under arrest.

Deputies have not released the name of the suspect.

The victim was treated by paramedics for non-life-threatening injuries.
