Cops: Man killed longtime friend with single punch

Hit to face came during altercation over girlfriend, Marion deputies say

OCALA, Fla. - A 19-year-old north Florida man faces manslaughter charges after his longtime friend died from what authorities describe as a fatal punch.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office says Mathew Gunter punched 23-year-old Travis Henshaw in the face Wednesday evening during an altercation over a girlfriend.

Witnesses told Local 6 Henshaw hit his head on the side of a door and on a concrete floor. He died Thursday at Shands at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

According to deputies, Gunter told them he acted out of anger and didn't intend to hurt his friend.

Robert Philyaw of Ocala told Local 6 he heard the commotion down the street.

"You've got to think about your actions before you do it, not after," he said.

Gunter fled after the incident, but deputies caught up with him and he admitted hitting Henshaw, deputies said.

Gunter remained in the Marion County Jail on Friday.
