BUSHNELL, Fla. - A train crashed into a vehicle in Sumter County on Monday, killing the wife of a sheriff's deputy who was headed to the accident scene.

A CSX freight train struck the vehicle about 8:30 a.m. on the railroad tracks at State Road 301 and County Road 720.

Kimberly Smothers, the wife of Sumter County sheriff's Deputy Jim Smothers, was killed in the crash, authorities said.

According to the Sumter County Sheriff's Office, Jim Smothers was responding to the crash when he was pulled back by his superiors and informed that his wife had been killed.

An investigation is ongoing, but the Sheriff's Office said it does not appear that the train was at fault in the crash.
