'Distracted' driver killed in Palm Bay, FHP says

PALM BAY, Fla. - A 56-year-old Palm Bay man who police said was distracted by a passenger lost control of his car and was killed in a crash late Sunday.

A Florida Highway Patrol crash report states Michael Hill was killed in the crash on Babcock Street near Buffer Preserve Drive at the Brevard-Indian River County line at about 9:35 p.m. The report states Hill was distracted by a passenger, identified by police as Erin J. Hill, 48, who was talking, according to Local 6 news partner Florida Today.

The Mitsubishi veered off the road onto the grass on the east side. FHP officials said the driver overcorrected, sending the car back across the road before it overturned in a ditch on the west shoulder. FHP troopers found the vehicle on its roof facing south.

Erin Hill suffered serious injuries and was taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne. The crash remains under investigation.
