Central Florida celebrates and encourages giving on Giving Tuesday

Events taking place for Giving Tuesday in Central Florida

CENTRAL FLORIDA – Following Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday has once again come to offer positive outlets for people to focus their holiday and end-of-year giving.

A partnership between the United Nations and the Belfer Center for Innovation and Social Impact, Giving Tuesday is an annual celebration that takes place to "connect diverse groups of individuals, communities and organizations around the world..to celebrate and encourage giving." The day of giving has been supported in the past by groups like Facebook, PayPal and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

According to the USA Today, Giving Tuesday elicited $168 million in donations from 1.6 million total contributions in 98 countries in 2016. The $168 million was a 44 percent increase from what was raised in 2015.

For the Central Florida area, the Edyth Bush Institute for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership at Rollins College has partnered with Giving Tuesday to provide a list of events and participating organizations that are accepting donations.

Included on the list of 172 participating foundations, schools and faith-based organizations are USO Central Florida, the University of Central Florida, A Gift for Teaching and Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra.

Area organizations and individuals are encouraged to use #givingtuesdaycfl on Twitter and Facebook to further promote and encourage area giving.
