Officers: Man tried to stab, choke police dog

Melbourne police say a man tried to stab and choke their K-9 "DiOGi" early Saturday morning.

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Melbourne police tell Local 6 a police dog fought off a suspect and helped capture him even though the man tried to stab and choke the dog.

Officers were investigating reports of an aggravated assault early Saturday morning on Mathers Street. When officers arrived on scene, a suspect armed with a box cutter ran away.

Officers decided to release their K-9 named "DiOGi" when the suspect -- 35-year-old Jose Fernando Cortez -- refused to stop.

When DiOGi caught up to Cortez, he tried to stab the dog with his box cutter, according to officers. However, the box cutter broke and DiOGi was not cut.

According to officers, Cortez then tried to choke DiOGi but the dog was able to hold him down until officers handcuffed him.
