ORLANDO, Fla. - Convicted murderer Darius Kimbrough was executed on Tuesday evening for the murder 28-year-old Denise Collins of Orlando.

Kimbrough spent 22 years on death row after he was convicted of killing Collins in her south Orlando apartment. A jury found him guilty of breaking into her home, beating her and raping her, leaving her bloodied.

She died a day later in a local hospital.

The woman who was holding her hand as she died -- her sister Annette Collins -- said she felt numb as Kimbrough received the lethal injection.

Her mother, Diane Stewart, agreed.

"He got better than she did," she told Local 6. "Cleaner too. He fell asleep."

On Tuesday, prison spokeswoman Jessica Cary said Kimbrough ate his final meal.

"He asked for two slices of pizza, fried green tomatoes, fried chicken, chicken gizzards, chocolate chip ice cream and fruit punch," she said.  "He ate about all of it."

Kimbrough was pronounced dead at 6:18 p.m., a prison spokesperson said.

The family traveled from New Jersey to witness the execution at the prison in Starke.
