iPhone 5 users can't talk, 4G LTE surf simultaneously

Phone not built to allow both functions at once

ORLANDO, Fla. - If you waited in line for the new iPhone 5 or are waiting for your per-ordered phone to come in the mail, you'll have to wait even longer for the phone to have a capability available on other non-Apple 4G phones.

The iPhone 5 does not have the ability to place a call and use data via a 4G LTE network at the same time.

For Verizon and Sprint customers, this means you cannot surf the web and make a call at all unless you are connected to WIFI.

Mat Ace, Verizon's district manager for the North Orlando and Daytona region told Local 6 that Apple built the phone with only one chip to keep the phone small and light.

"The phone uses the same chip to connect to the 4G LTE network and the network that's used to make calls, as a result you cannot do both things at once," said Ace.

AT&T customers using the new  Apple device will be able to surf and talk but it will be at a slower speed, according to the Los Angeles Times.

"AT&T has two 4G networks that work together for customers, LTE and HSPA+. Customers are able to enjoy an ultra-fast and consistent 4G experience on their compatible device as they move in and out of LTE areas staying on 4G speeds," said Gretchen Schultz, an AT & T spokesperson via an email.

Verizon contends that LTE is superior to HSPA+ and a spokesman noted that many independent industry insiders as well as people at AT & T regard it to be the emerging 4G standard .

When iPhone was first launched on Verizon, users were not able to surf and talk at the same time  the product did not support the simultaneous capability on LTE networks.

Verizon was the first carrier to build and use an LTE network.  As a result, the company boasts to have the widest 4G LTE coverage area in the United States.

But AT&T used the iPhone's lack of capability on Verizon as a marketing ploy to entice customers in the past.

Now AT&T is apparently once again the only carrier that will give new iPhone users the simultaneous talk and surf capabilities on their network and is once again touting their network as bigger and faster.

"With other carriers, when you travel outside of their LTE coverage area, you're on a much slower 3G network," said Schultz.

Ace said eventually the newer Iphones will have 4g LTE talk and surf capabilities on all networks, but the technology is still being developed.

The problem does not affect 4G Android products made by Samsung, Motorola, HTC and others because Ace said those phones have a dual-chip design. Those users are currently able to talk and surf at 4G speeds on any wireless network.

Apple did not immediately respond with a comment about the single chip design.
