Orlando police arrest man in SWAT standoff

Apartment building evacuated over incident

ORLANDO, Fla. – Orlando police said Tuesday that they captured an alleged gunman after he got away during an overnight SWAT standoff.

Matthew Mikell was captured at the Waterstone Apartments, where the standoff took place hours earlier, police said.

Late Monday night, a woman told officers that her boyfriend, identified as Mikell, had threatened her with a gun. Officers thought Mikell was inside and called in the SWAT team to try and get him to come out.

The apartment building was evacuated for hours before police fired smoke gas canisters into the apartment. Police said they then discovered that Mikell was not inside.

A search was launched for Mikell, who was later arrested.

The victim suffered minor injuries but will recover, police said.
