Police: Woman held intruder at gunpoint

2 men arrested In Winter Springs robbery attempt

WINTER SPRINGS, Fla. - A woman who lives alone in a Winter Springs home held an intruder at gunpoint after two men broke into her garage, according to police.

The robbery attempt happened just before 3 a.m. at a home on Tiverton Street.

Homeowner Rebecca Bruce said she heard her house alarm beep, so she grabbed her gun and checked the home.  She said she found two men inside her garage and one of them ran away with one of her golf clubs.

The woman said she told the other man that she would shoot him if he moved.  She then called 911.

"I need a police officer," Bruce said.  "I have a home invader.  There were two in my garage.  One guy ran out the side door and the other is standing in my living room."

"Are you holding him at gunpoint or something?" the dispatcher asked.

"I am," said Bruce, who told Local 6 News that the man begged her not to shoot him.

After a brief search, the other man was also arrested, Winter Springs police said.

"I'm thankful, relieved and thinking, 'Wow, this could've ended very differently," Bruce said.

Neighbors said they're proud of Bruce.

"I think it's brilliant, absolutely brilliant.  If I had a gun, I'd probably do the same thing.  More power to her.  (You've got to) protect your own," Patricia Townsend said.

The homeowner said the two intruders entered through her garage door, which she left slightly open for her cat because it was cold outside.
