UCF chief of police announces retirement

Richard Beary served as police chief for 11 years

ORLANDO, Fla – University of Central Florida Chief of Police Richard Beary announced Wednesday that he will be retiring from law enforcement on June 30.

In a post to the UCF Police Department's official Facebook page announcing his retirement, Beary expressed appreciation for his position and how long he had been able to serve.

"I am proud to have served 41 years as a law enforcement officer and 11 years as Chief of Police for the University of Central Florida," Beary said. "I depart as the most tenured law enforcement executive in Central Florida, with over 25 years as chief."

He went on to list a few of the moments that stood out to him over the course of his impressive career: getting the opportunity to present at prestigious law enforcement training programs, surviving many life-threatening encounters and witnessing countless acts of compassion.

Beary also served as president of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, where he was able to "represent law enforcement officers before global leaders, members of Congress and the President of the United States."

He finished by saying that the selection process for his position will begin early next year. 

This year, the UCF PD's annual Security Fire and Safety Guide reported that the number of crimes reported on campus and in on-campus residential facilities decreased from 552 in 2015 to 505 in 2016, with decreases across the board in drug and alcohol arrests and sexual offenses.
