Lockdown lifted at Sanford hospital after search for gunman, officials say

Stolen vehicle crashed near hospital

SANFORD, Fla.Central Florida Regional Hospital was placed on lockdown Sunday night after a man stole a vehicle, crashed it then fled on foot near the hospital, according to local authorities.

The hospital was placed on lockdown Sunday night as officials searched for a man who they said led deputies on a chase after an armed robbery.

Trevion McGill, 17, was arrested Friday in connection with the robbery.

Sanford Police Department officials said Volusia County Sheriff's Department deputies were in pursuit of the armed man after he stole a vehicle.

The carjacking victim told a 911 operator that he was playing basketball with some friends at Wes Crile Park in Deltona when someone took his keys that were near his belongings and stole his 2013 blue Hyundai Elantra. He said his phone was in his vehicle when it was stolen, so he used the Find My iPhone app from a friend's phone to help authorities track the vehicle.

"We're trying to locate the iPhone that's inside the car so we can get an address for where it's at," the victim told the 911 operator.

A deputy who located the vehicle in Orange City successfully deployed Stop Sticks, but the robber continued toward Sanford until he lost control and crashed into a pole near the hospital, authorities said.

Deputies said the man then got out of the car and ran toward the hospital, prompting an hour-long an hour long lockdown.

"They asked us if we've seen somebody running with a gun, with a weapon," Patrick Hegarty said. "We said, 'No.'"

Hegarty said the officers then told him and the nurse, as well as a handful of other medical staff, to get into the X-ray room. The officers told them the hospital was on lockdown until further notice.

"We were all just waiting, talking, keeping our mind off of it," Hegarty said.

Officials said out of precaution, the hospital was placed on lockdown as they searched for the suspect.

Deputies said they were unable to locate the man, but that officials found the gun and were able to retrieve some fingerprints from the vehicle.

The victim's iPhone and his coworker's Samsung Galaxy were found inside the vehicle and returned to them, deputies said.

McGill was arrested after an investigation led authorities to his probation officer who said he had a meeting with McGill on Friday. McGill was arrested on several charges.
