Lyft driver rattled after strange object hits car: 'Next thing I know, I hear an explosion'

4 other drivers in area reported similar incidents

OCALA, Fla. – An Ocala man said he was driving down SW 32nd Street when a car window shattered, sending glass all over him and his passenger, which prompted him to pull over.

"I was talking with my passenger (and) we were having a good conversation, and the next thing I know, I hear an explosion," driver Mike Minix said.

Minix was driving for Lyft at 2 a.m. Sunday with his customer in the passenger seat, when something came blasting through the window, leaving them both confused.

That's when Minix looked down to see blood, he said. And he felt pain in his right arm.

"My arm was hurting tremendously, so I thought I might (have) been shot by a gun," Minix said. "I was like, 'I think I've been shot. I need to go to the emergency room. Call 911.'"

Minix said he then started to drive to a hospital.

When deputies searched his car, they found what Minix described as a marble the size of a golf ball, sitting in the back seat.

Deputies said Minix wasn't the only one hit that night. Four other drivers reported similar incidents, all within several miles of SW 32nd Street in Ocala.

Minix told News 6 that he and his passenger are OK, but the incident has put him out of work until he can get his car fixed.

He said he doesn't want this to happen to anyone else.

"It was definitely something that could (have) killed somebody," Minix said. "If that would (have) happened to be a few inches over (and) hit her in the temple, (like) the biggest knot I have on the back of my arm, it could (have) killed her."

Deputies said they searched the area for the person responsible, but found no one.
