Investigators said Saulenas was asleep when he woke up and confronted a man and woman who were stealing things inside his home.

The couple attacked the man, who was bleeding from the bridge of his nose when police arrived, according to investigators, who added that Saulenas' entire face had blood on it and there were blood stains on his shirt.

"I just got beat up," the 89-year-old man said to a 911 dispatcher.

"Who beat you up, sir?" the dispatcher asked.

"A guy with a pistol," the man replied.  "He hit me with a pistol."

The man also told the dispatcher that the couple stole some jewelry and cash.

Saulenas was taken to a hospital, where he was treated and released.

Police, who said the attack appeared to be random, did not release a description of the assailants.
