DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - A 47-year-old man has died after a fire ignited at a Daytona Beach apartment complex early Monday morning, according to fire officials.

Daytona Beach Fire Department said they received a report on the fire on the 1400 block of South Nova Road just before 1:30 a.m. Monday at the Ridgecrest Park Apartments.

Heavy smoke was spotted coming from the one-story concrete block apartment unit by a neighbor, who reported it to authorities.

When firefighters arrived on scene, they forced their way into the apartment, where they found the man laying face down behind the door and tried to resuscitate him.

He was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center where he died, fire officials said.

Fire officials said a small cat was also found dead in the apartment.

Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire and confine all damage to the single apartment.

No other injuries were reported.

Authorities said preliminary investigation finds the fire starting in the bedroom accidentally. The State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating.
