COCOA, Fla. - Cocoa police say a 23-year-old man who was apparently lying in the middle of a darkened roadway died after being struck by a car.

The unidentified man, suffering from head injuries, was airlifted to Holmes Regional Medical Center's trauma unit following the accident, which happened about 3:30 a.m. Friday near Blake Avenue and Peachtree Street.

The man -- who police suspect may have been drinking before the ending up in the road --- was pronounced dead at about 8 a.m. Friday by doctors, Local 6 News partner Florida Today reported.

Traffic investigators remained at the scene throughout the morning and questioned the 19-year-old driver and her passenger.

No charges were filed pending the outcome of the investigation.

"The driver and her passenger thought it was a tree branch in the roadway and tried to swerve at the last minute," said Barbara Matthews, spokeswoman for the Cocoa Police Department. "They pulled over and the passenger, who is also 19, called 911," Matthews said.
