Man run over, killed by tractor-trailer

Victim's family wants charges filed against driver

ORLANDO, Fla. - The family of a man killed in an early morning hit-and-run crash wants the driver of a semi-truck to be charged in the death.

The Florida Highway Patrol named Stephen Cospito, 32, as the driver of the semi that knocked over a pedestrian, then ran him over near the intersection of Trussway Boulevard and Landstreet Road in Orange County.

Cospito has not been charged, and dense fog and the time of day may have hampered visibility, said an FHP spokeswoman, who said visibility was estimated at less than a half-mile.

Vincent "Paul" Callaghan, 53, was walking to work when the unthinkable happened, said his ex-wife Woneeta Hart.

"Nobody should go like that," said Hart. "I'm angry at the truck driver, but what can I do?"

Troopers said Callaghan was walking across Trussway Blvd when a truck turned left from Landstreet Road and knocked him down with the rear of trailer.

Callaghan's family can't understand how the truck's driver could have missed seeing him and said they're angry that the driver never stopped to help after the crash.

Troopers said Stephen Cospito was driving a truck marked with an "LS" and parked in the parking lot of L&S Logistic Services.

Local 6 has learned the company is owned by the Cospito family, and that Stephen Cospito has a history of bad driving. The list of traffic tickets include careless driving, failure to yield, passing a stopped school bus and speeding, according to the Orange County Clerk of Courts website.

Knowing this history, Callaghan's family thinks he should have been off the road years ago.

"Maybe take him off the road," said Hart. "I hope the Florida Highway Patrol will file criminal charges."

Local 6 emailed company representatives after hours to ask about Cospito's driving history and whether he remains an active driver for the company, but nobody returned the message.
