A local man is accused of attacking his girlfriend and his mother with a rock then setting an RV on fire while he was inside it as deputies approached to make an arrest, according to a report from the Brevard County Sheriff's Office.

During an argument with his girlfriend Thursday night, Kevin Cox spit on the woman several times, grabbed her and submersed her head underwater in a ditch on Gilmore Street, the report said.

The woman struggled until she freed herself from the attack, but then deputies said Cox grabbed a large rock and threw it at her head, knocking her unconscious.

Cox's mother, fearing that the girlfriend would be seriously injured or killed, intervened to try to protect the woman, according to the affidavit.

Cox threw another large rock at his mother as she dragged the girlfriend inside to safety, deputies said.

By the time deputies arrived, they said Cox had fled the scene on foot. Authorities were completing paperwork about the incident when Cox returned and entered an RV on the property to avoid arrest, according to the affidavit.

Cox set the RV he was in on fire while deputies were outside, the report said. Three deputies said they had to force entry into the burning RV to save Cox.

Cox, who has been previously convicted of battery and is awaiting trial on a domestic violence battery charge, was charged with two counts of aggravated battery - domestic violence, aggravated assault - domestic violence, two counts of felony battery, false imprisonment - domestic violence, resisting an officer without violence and arson.

He's being held at the Brevard County Jail without bond.
