Man sought in attempted kidnapping of 9-year-old boy, Winter Park police say

Police take proactive steps in neighborhood after alleged incident

WINTER PARK, Fla. - Winter Park police are searching for a man in an attempted kidnapping of a 9-year-old boy on Tuesday night.

Police said they were called to the area of Rouen Avenue and Drum Street just before 11:30 p.m. Tuesday for an attempted kidnapping report.

Investigators would not release details about the alleged incident, but believe the little boy's story and he helped them create a composite sketch of the man.

Police have also taken proactive steps in the neighborhood, including going door-to-door handing out fliers, positioning a squad car along the road and stepping up frequent patrols through the area.

"Scared, honestly. I'm scared for my children. I hope they catch the guy or I hope that it's not true. One or the other," said Cecelia Neely, who could not believe such a serious crime could happen on the quiet street she's lived her entire life.

Neighbors told Local 6 the boy was inside his home when the incident happened and his parents heard him screaming.

It's a scary reminder for all parents, no matter how quiet the neighborhood.

"Honestly, I don't let my children out of my sight, period," said Neely. "We live in a very different world then when I grew up, even though it's the same neighborhood."

The 9-year-old victim described the suspected kidnapper as a black male with a thin build, light-colored eyes with short black hair and wearing black clothing. It's not clear what the suspected vehicle looks like.

Anyone with information regarding the crime should contact either Crime Line at 407-423-TIPS or the Winter Park Police Department at 407-644-1313.
