Man tried to run over Volusia deputy, officials say

Michael Walsh, 3 teen runaways arrested in Oak Hill

OAK HILL, Fla. - A 21-year-old man was arrested on attempted murder charges after he allegedly tried to run over a Volusia deputy and intentionally crashing into his cruiser.

Michael Walsh was arrested Wednesday morning near the 200 block of N. U.S. 1 in Oak Hill.

According to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office, Walsh was driving a car with three teen girls, ages 16 and 17, who were planning to run away to New Jersey.  The mother of one of the girls called the Sheriff's Office about her daughter's whereabouts, and a deputy went to a gas station to locate her, officials said.

"What he did was completely uncalled for and that's not right," said Autumn Crawley, whose 16-year-old daughter was with Walsh when it happened Tuesday evening.

Deputy Thomas Proctor arrested two of the girls on probation violation charges and put all three of them in a patrol vehicle, said the Sheriff's Office, which added that Walsh, who has a suspended license, ran to his car and drove away.

Officials said Walsh then made a U-turn and started accelerating toward Proctor, who was talking with the mother of one of the girls near his patrol car.  Witnesses said Walsh's car was traveling about 70 miles per hour and headed for the deputy.

Proctor and woman jumped out of the way, and Walsh crashed into the cruiser with the girls inside, the Sheriff's Office said.

Two of the girls were taken by ambulance to Bert Fish Medical Center in New Smyrna Beach with minor injuries, deputies said.

Walsh, who was not seriously injured in the crash, was arrested at gunpoint by the deputy, officials said.

Walsh faces one count of attempted homicide of a law enforcement officer, one count of attempted homicide, three counts of aggravated battery, two counts of interference with child custody, one count of criminal mischief and one count of driving with a suspended license.
