Mourners in Brazil were shocked -- and some even fainted -- when a dead man walked into his own funeral.

The hair-raising incident appears to be a case of mistaken identity.

Both men worked as car washers, and police apparently told family members that the wrong brother had been killed, The Daily Mail reported.

The brother who was still alive, Jose Marcos Araujo, identified his brother Gilberto's body at the morgue in Alagoinhas on Sunday, police inspector Roberto Limo told The Associated Press.

He took the body to his mother's home where a wake was being held.

A few hours before the burial Monday, a friend of Gilberto's saw Jose Marcos walking down the street and told him that his family was mourning him, according to the AP.

When he showed up at his mother's house, some mourners fainted and others were so scared they ran away.

His mother, Marina Santana, was overjoyed.

"What mother wouldn't be after being told her son is dead and then sees him alive," she told reporters.
