Brevard County Health Dept. says rabid bat found in Melbourne

ORLANDO, Fla. – Brevard County health officials said Tuesday that a bat found in Melbourne tested positive for rabies.

According to Brevard County Health Department Director Dr. Heidar Heshmati said the bat was found on Bristol Lane, Florida Today reported.

"We advise everyone in the area who has been exposed to any stray animals or even if their own pet has been exposed to call Animal Services and Enforcement," Heshmati said in a press release.

Rabies can be deadly to humans, he said, and he asked that people report strange-behaving animals, avoid direct contact with wild animals and have their cats and dogs immunized against rabies.
