Melbourne man arrested after 4-hour standoff

Police say man was involved in domestic violence incident

MELBOURNE, Fla. - Melbourne police arrested a man after a nearly four-hour standoff in the parking lot of an apartment complex Sunday evening.

Police Lt. Byron Barnes said officers responded to Paradise Cay apartments on Post Road west of U.S. 1 at about 7 p.m., according to Local 6 news partner Florida Today. A man there was involved in a "domestic violence incident" and threatened to kill himself, or have the police shoot him, officials said.

"The subject barricaded himself in a vehicle and armed himself with a knife," Barnes said. "He advised officers on scene he was going to ram them with his vehicle."

SWAT and crisis negotiation teams were called to the scene. Eventually police subdued the man with Tasers and arrested him just before 11 p.m.

The man's name was not immediately released.
