Fight leads to shooting outside convenience store, Melbourne police say

Gunshot victim expected to survive

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Police are investigating reports of a shooting Monday morning in South Melbourne following a disagreement in front of a convenience mart, News 6 partner Florida Today reported.

The incident was called in about 9 a.m. in the 600 block of East University Boulevard. Police said two men were arguing in front of the University Mart when they began fighting. Police said one of the men, identified as Anotnio Campbell, pulled out a handgun. Campbell was later charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and shooting into an occupied vehicle, reports show.

The victim then knocked the weapon out of Campbell's hand police said. The victim then got into a vehicle and was attempting to leave the parking lot when Campbell picked up the weapon and fired it through a passenger side window and into the car, striking the victim in the leg. Campbell then rode off from the area on a bicycle.

The unidentified victim then attempted to drive off, striking a parked car. He was later transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center. 

Police converged on the area after reports that someone may have been wounded. Officers continued to search the area and later located Campbell hiding in a nearby wooded area. Campbell was taken into custody on drug charges, including trafficking in cocaine, and was being questioned about a possible link to the shooting. Campbell was later charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and shooting into an occupied vehicle, reports show. 

An investigation is ongoing.
