Missing New Smyrna Beach boater found safe

Man called police to say he was OK after vanishing last month

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. - The boater who was reported missing last month has been found safe, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Enrique Hernandez, 48, of Apopka, called New Smyrna police and said he was OK on Monday, weeks after he left home to go fishing in the Intracoastal Waterway.

Police found his truck and boat trailer the next day at a nearby ramp, but after several days of searching were unable to find Hernandez or his boat.

"After a month, you kind of think the worst and you think maybe he's dead," said neighbor Melissa Evans.

That's what many neighbors were led to believe about Hernandez.

Hernandez was reported missing early last month while fishing on a boat in New Smyrna Beach. Multiple agencies including the coast guard looked for four days, before suspending the search.

Victoria Fagundo told Local 6 she was questioned by police Thursday morning.

"They were fishing for information, wanted to know if we knew anything, just any little thing that, to us, would be insignificant" said Fagundo. "I really don't want to believe this is what's going on. I really don't because they are really a nice family."

Police are still trying to figure out where Hernandez has been this entire time.
