Mix-up blamed for missing police horse

'Maverick' arrived in Miami in April

SWEETWATER, Fla. - The Sweetwater Police Department found a police horse that arrived in Miami in April, then was "unaccounted for for quite some time," according to a news release.

The horse, named Maverick, was purchased from Asbury University in Kentucky. Maverick was set to join the mounted patrol unit at Dolphin Mall and participate in community events.

Investigators searching for Maverick received a tip that led them to the home of a former city employee, where the horse was found, police say. Once Maverick was identified, the former city employee gave the horse to investigators.

No charges have been filed. An investigation is ongoing.
