Motorcyclist, 65, strikes railroad crossing arm, dies in Port Orange

PORT ORANGE, Fla. - A 65-year-old motorcyclist died Friday morning after striking a railroad crossing arm in Port Orange, police said.

Hector Hernandez, of New Smyrna Beach, was killed in the crash, which happened around 9:30 a.m. on Nova Road near Ridgewood Avenue.

According to Port Orange police, Hernandez was ejected from his 1997 Kawasaki Voyager after striking the crossing arm, which was lowered for an oncoming train.  Hernandez was not struck by the train, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

According to police, it appears that Hernandez was not wearing a helmet.

An investigation is ongoing.
