NASCAR season kicks off

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - NASCAR season has officially kicked off, and hundreds of thousands of people are making their way to Daytona Beach to see their favorite racers hit the track.

"We made it! We made it," said Vicky Bushey, who lives four miles from the Canadian border with her husband Terry.

Every year the couple makes it down for the Daytona 500, but this year the winter storms made their drive very long and icy.

It was a chilly start to the biggest week of the year at Daytona International Speedway.

"I got my scarf, so I'm warm," said Andrea Cuveas of Orlando.

While some race fans brought out their winter gear, Johnny Castigilia, 5, got to try on his brand new ear muffs.

"Hearing the loud cars for him, and seeing, you know, sometimes the accidents, which are terrible, but it's a great time," said his mom, Regan.

Katelyn was sitting five rows from the finish line when Jimmie Johnson crashed his car. She got some debris in her eye.

"It was painful," Katelyn said.

She says she'll be okay, and her mom Jamie Schaffer, says they'll be coming back.

"It's part of racing. That's what happens when you come to the race track," Jamie Schaffer said.
