Light earthquakes shake San Jose area

Quake was felt as far north as San Francisco

In the past 10 days, there have been two earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater near San Jose, California, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The most recent occurred Tuesday evening, according to reports from the Los Angeles Times, CBS News and other news outlets.

Tuesday night’s shallow magnitude 4.0 earthquake was reported nine miles from San Jose at 10:32 p.m. local time at a depth of 5.6 miles about 8 miles east of the Alum Rock area.

The USGS says the quake was on the Calaveras Fault and was felt as far north as San Francisco.

San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo urged people via Twitter “to ready your home kit & be prepared” for earthquakes.
