New red-light cameras online in Osceola County

Cameras at intersection of Poinciana Boulevard & Pleasant Hill Road

POINCIANA, Fla. - Two new red-light cameras will begin working in Osceola County on Monday, but tickets won't be issued until a 30-day warning period comes to a close.

During the month-long warning phase, drivers will be mailed a warning if they run the light, but won't be required to pay the state-mandated $158 fine.

On July 16, the fines go into effect.

The cameras are at the intersection of Poinciana Boulevard and Pleasant Hill Road and they are the first in unincorporated Osceola County.

In January, the county commission approved a list of 10 intersections for the cameras. They say the rest will come online later in the summer.

According to a commission agenda, here are the intersections at which the cameras will be placed:

1. Pleasant Hill Road & S. Orange Blossom Trail
2. W. Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway & N. Poinciana Boulevard
3. Cypress Parkway & N. Doverplum Avenue
4. N. Orange Blossom Trail & E. Osceola Parkway
5. S. Poinciana Boulevard & S. Orange Blossom Trail
6. Vineland Road & Polynesian Isle Boulevard
7. Vineland Road & N. Poinciana Boulevard
8. S. Poinciana Boulevard & Pleasant Hill Road
9. Celebration Avenue & W. Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway
10. Partin Settlement Road & E. Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway

Some drivers worry about the machines issuing tickets when a light is yellow, but the county said each violation will be verified by a deputy before it is mailed. They will make a decision on if the fine is warranted based on the evidence.

Driver Chris Brown told Local 6 he supports the idea of more red-light cameras at Osceola County intersections.

"If it helps cut down on people running the red lights and the danger that would be great," said Brown.

According to state law, $113 of the red-light fine goes to the state, while the other $45 goes to the municipality in which the violation occurs.
