New safe school initiative hopes to help kids with choices online

Presentation offered to middle and high school students in Seminole County

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla – The online world is affecting students.

This year, the Safe School Initiative: Digital Citizenship presentation is being offered to middle school students in addition to high school students in Seminole County.

The hope is to reach children at younger ages to prepare them to make the right decisions online in the future.

The presentation is a joint effort of the FBI's Violent Crimes Against Children Innocent Images Task Force and the Seminole County Sheriff's Office. It gives students an eye-opening look at topics including sexting, social media, grooming, bullying and much more.

"You guys gotta understand everything you do today can affect your scholarships, can affect your college applications, can affect your jobs. As you get older, it can affect your relationships," presenter Kevin Kaufman from the FBI said.

"It really tells you how different predators can take different forms and access your personal information and get inappropriate content from your social media accounts," Cole Sinness, a seventh-grader, said.

Organizers say they're getting results from these presentations, with several students coming up afterward to tell them about potential cases of online abuse.
