Florida recount continues, George Zimmerman to serve probation

Volusia County recount finds extra 240 votes

The first round of recounting ballots in Volusia County ended with staff discovering they had several hundred fewer votes than they'd counted on Election Day.

Volusia County Supervisor of Elections Lisa Lewis said after staff finished recounting ballots around midnight Tuesday, they found an undercount or discrepancy of 240 votes. The votes did not favor one party or the other, Lewis said. Read more here.


George Zimmerman to serve 1 year probation in stalking case

A Florida judge agreed to let George Zimmerman serve probation for a year after the former neighborhood watch leader's attorney entered a no contest plea to resolve a misdemeanor charge of stalking a private investigator.

However, Seminole County Judge Mark Herr admonished Zimmerman to understand that "words matter." The judge expressed hope that Zimmerman would avoid making future appearances at the Seminole County Courthouse. Read the full story here.

Population of herpes-infested monkeys at Florida park growing

While herpes-carrying rhesus macaques monkeys have been roaming Silver Springs State Park for decades, a new study suggests that without intervention, their population could double within years, potentially posing risks to people and the environment.

The study found that the monkeys are breeding rapidly and by 2022, their population could potentially double from its current number of about 300. Read more about the study featured in the National Geographic here.
