OCALA, Fla. - The Ocala mother who shot and killed her 6-month-old son and then turned the gun on herself last week has died on Tuesday, according to Marion County sheriff's deputies.

Melanie Reyes, 20, shot and killed her son, Jonah Mendoza, on Friday and shot herself after posting a statement about wanting to kill her son on her Facebook page. When deputies arrived, they found Reyes and Jonah with gunshot wounds and took them to Ocala Regional Medical Center, where the infant died.

Reyes' family took her off of life support on Tuesday morning. She was originally expected to survive, according to deputies.

20-year-old Jordan Mendoza, Jonah's father, spoke out for the first time since the death of his son on Monday.

The couple had been together previously for 15 months. Mendoza's attorney told Local 6 there were warning signs that something could happen and that Mendoza notified the sheriff's office. He was trying to get joint custody of his son when the shooting occurred.
