Brevard fire fighters respond to call near Patrick Air Force Base

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. - A 15-month-old boy drowned in a shallow, decorative pond near the entrance of his home near Patrick Air Force Base, according to officials.

The drowning occurred around 6:45 p.m. Wednesday in the 600 block of Sand Dollar Cove in the North Housing area of Patrick Air Force Base.  Paramedics said the small pond was less than six inches deep.

"We are deeply saddened by his death and our hearts reach out to the entire family right now," Vice Commander of the 45th Space Wing Col. Bob Pavelko said in a statement released to the media. "Members from various agencies of the wing are with the family to ensure they have all the help they need."

Rescuers performed first aid and transported the boy by ambulance to Holmes Regional Medical Center.  He was later pronounced dead.

No other details have been released.

According to the Florida Department of Health, Florida loses more children ages 1 to 4 to drowning than any other state.
