Orange County deputies charge man with 1st-degree murder in roommate's death

Homicide victim identified as 23-year-old Shelby Fazio

ORLANDO, Fla. - Orange County deputies on Wednesday charged the prime suspect in a woman's homicide with first-degree murder, along with attempted murder of his other roommate.

Bryan Santana, 20, was also charged with attempted first-degree murder with a weapon and was booked into Orange County Jail on Tuesday afternoon. He is being held on a no-bond status.

Santana's other roommate, Shelby Fazio, 23, was found dead at a home in the 400 block of North John Street at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.

According to court records, Santana confessed to killing Fazio by strangling her and stabbing her in the neck.  He also said he had sex with her after she was dead. He did not tell deputies why he killed her.

According to Santana's arrest report, the roommate arrived to the home on North John Street at 9 a.m. and saw Santana washing his hands in the bathroom. The roommate said there was blood smears on the floor from the hallway leading to Fazio's room and her door was shut, deputies said.

The roommate grabbed his items and tried to leave and call 911, feeling that something was wrong, when Santana attacked him in the living room with pepper spray and a knife, the report stated.

The victim knocked away the knife and ran outside to call 911. When deputies arrived, the victim told them Santana lived in the house before he moved in three months ago. Fazio also lived at the home, according to the report. When deputies caught up with Santana Tuesday, they say he was driving the victim's car.

According to court records, he told an officer he was looking for a Walmart so he could buy a fake gun. He said he planned to point it at an officer so the officer would shot him, according to the records.

Local 6 was at the home on Tuesday as investigators appeared to pull a blood-stained shirt out of a trash can in front of a vehicle.

Fazio was a recent college graduate from Michigan.
