ORLANDO, Fla. – If you break it down over 30 days, YouMail Ceo Alex Qulici said Orlando’s 407 area code averaged 20 million robocalls calls a month last year.
That means Orlando’s estimated population of 1.4 million received an average of 14 unwanted recorded messages in a 30-day period in 2016.
“I think you’re getting about double of what an average city is ,” Qulici told WKMG
News 6. “Most of them simply go ahead and dial randomly starting with 407-311-1111 and go from there.”
Chances are no matter where you live in central Florida, the free trips, sweepstakes victories and the now infamous bogus IRS recorded “you owe” messages have connected with your cell phone or land line over the past 24 months.
Qulici’s YouMail.com did the math based on complaints from its customers in the Orlando area, but the interruptions he said, are a national trend.
To counter the recorded calls YouMail.com has designed a trap to fool the system.
The free service, called “Smart Blocking,”
essentially intercepts Robocalls with recorded messages that range from “the number you have reached is out of service” to “there are thousands of calls ahead of you.”
Once the call falls in the trap, Quilici said, you don’t hear a thing.
“If we can suppress it so it doesn’t ring when they call, that is much less of a hassle,” Quilici said.
There are several companies offering similar robocall blocking systems: YouMail and Nomorobo are the most used and customer friendly.
